Is a used Ford EcoSport a good car?
The Ford EcoSport has long had a reputation for being a distinctly average car, despite being based on the excellent Ford Fiesta. When it was first introduced in 2014, it had a cheap interior, poor technology and a disappointing driving experience. It’s tough to recommend these cars over the likes of the Nissan Juke.
Revisions in 2017 improved things somewhat, with a redesigned exterior, improved interior, a new diesel engine and a four-wheel drive option. Even so, it still lags behind most rivals, with more appealing options even within the Ford range, such as the Ford Fiesta Active and Ford Puma.
The Ford EcoSport isn’t a total write off, though – it’s just up against very capable rivals. It has characterful, chunky 4x4-ish styling, and while the interior is pretty dull to look at, there are soft-touch materials that feel more upmarket than you’d find in a Hyundai Kona.
Other plus sides include an intuitive infotainment system that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Practicality isn’t great though, with tall passengers feeling cramped in the back seats and the 356-litre boot being pretty average for the class. Worse still is the side-hinged boot door that’s impossible to open if you’re parked close to a wall.
Being based on the Fiesta does at least mean the EcoSport is pretty nimble and occasionally fun to drive, so could be worth a punt if this sounds more appealing than the extra comfort found in alternatives like the Citroen C3 Aircross.
What to look for when buying a second hand Ford EcoSport
Before 2017, the EcoSport had a five-speed manual transmission, but this was swapped for a six-speed. These models are better for long distance driving, where they will be a bit quieter and better on fuel in top gear.
If you’re looking for an automatic transmission, those fitted to EcoBoost engines are more durable. Those that aren’t are liable to wear out the clutch over time, so could be worth avoiding. Otherwise watch out for laboured gear changes or revs spiking between shifts while on a test drive, which could be signs of wear.
Interior quality was poor, particularly on earlier versions, so make sure you have a poke and prod around the cabin to check everything is still in place and there are no scrapes or ill-fitting trim pieces to be found.
Finally, a common complaint about the EcoBoost engines is that, in real world driving, they’re a long way off their claimed economy figures, even accounting for the fact these are usually optimistic anyway. If test driving one, look at the on-board trip computer’s economy readings and ask the owner how they have found it.
