Is a used Volvo V60 a good car?

If you still have a vision of Volvos being big, boxy blocks of estate-shaped metal, you’re in for a pleasant surprise. The V60 is a great example of the Swedish firm’s rise, being a sleek and handsome wagon with a high quality interior and unrivalled safety tech.

Those ‘Thor’s Hammer’ headlights make it look like a baby Volvo V90 and the L-shaped lights at the rear give it a real presence. Inside there’s loads of plush leather and smart aluminium. It’s all very fancy,

The vertical touchscreen looks great and has some nice menu design but it’s really fiddly to use on the move. Audi and BMW have much more intuitive systems.

That’s just about where the complaints begin and end though. It’s very comfortable inside and once on the move irons out the worst British roads have to offer. The boot is spacious too, being bigger than that in the Audi A4 Avant and Mercedes C-Class Estate. You can fit a mountain bike in the back if you fold the rear seats down.

You only have the option of petrol and plug-in hybrid models in the latest versions, but there are plenty of diesels on the used market for those who do a lot of motorway miles.

Either way it’s not the most exciting car to drive on a twisty road – that’s the trade off for comfort, unfortunately – while the auto transmission can be a bit sluggish when you put your foot down and need it to drop a gear or two.

Safety-conscious buyers are well-served here. Volvos are just about the safest cars you can buy and the V60’s excellent Euro NCAP score and driver assistance systems make it no different.

What to look for when buying a second hand Volvo V60

The Volvo V60 is generally a reliable car, and has scored well with owners in the executive cars class. There aren’t any major recurring issues you need to be aware of, so stick to the typical used car buying advice of looking out for any signs of bodywork and interior trim damage, and lean towards cars with a full service history.

Be sure to take the car on a test drive to check the V60 drives well. This is a good chance to check out that hesitant automatic gearbox, too. You’ll get used to it, but it might prove annoying and off-putting for some.

It’s also worth knowing that opting for an auto will return slightly worse fuel economy, with manual diesels looking at around 55mpg and autos closer to 51. Opt for four-wheel drive and that drops further to about 48mpg, so think about your priorities here.
