Is a used Toyota Corolla Touring Sports a good car?
If you’re looking for a practical estate with low running costs, the Toyota Corolla Touring Sports makes a great case for itself. There are some mighty appealing alternatives in the form of the Volkswagen Golf Estate and Skoda Octavia Estate, though, so it has its work cut out.
Perhaps its biggest selling point is its hybrid powertrain, which is available with both a 1.8- and 2.0-litre petrol engine. The smaller one is more than powerful enough and returns better fuel economy, so gets our vote. The Corolla Touring Sports is also really easy to drive, riding comfortably over bumps in the road and offering great visibility.
It’s not the most practical estate, though. The rear seats are fine for kids but adults will find it a squeeze, while the boot capacity is just under 600 litres, a whopping 40 litres behind the class-leading Octavia.
The interior isn’t the most exciting design, but it’s solidly put together and should stand up well as a family wagon.
What to look for when buying a second hand Toyota Corolla Touring Sports
Toyota’s excellent reliability record should offer peace of mind with the Corolla Touring Sports. On top of this, every year the car is serviced at an approved dealer adds an extra year to the warranty up to 10 years.
If you’re concerned about practicality, the 1.8-litre engine should be your go-to because boot space with the 2.0-litre unit is almost 20 litres less, putting it even further behind competitors.
There’s just one recall for this model, relating to an issue with the emergency calling system. Check if this has been done, but it’s a simple fix at a Toyota dealership if not.
Otherwise it’s just the usual family car checks. Give the interior a once over for any trim damage or stains, and walk around the car to look for dents or scrapes in the bodywork. On the test drive, make sure there are no obvious judders or hesitations when switching from the petrol engine to electric-only mode.
