Used Volvo XC90 pros and cons
+ Cool, minimalist interior
+ Excellent safety technology
+ Spacious boot
- Diesel engine is noisy
- Cramped third-row seats
- More comfortable competitors
Is a used Volvo XC90 a good car?
The Volvo XC90 is a handsome SUV with a posh, minimalist interior, premium appeal, class-leading safety tech and a big boot. It even seats seven. All of this comes at a price when new, but on the used market, depreciation means there are some great deals to be found.
Inside it’s spacious for all passengers, and the sleek interior design makes for one of the most pleasant cabins in the business. The infotainment screens are big and clear but not quite as slick and intuitive to use as those from the likes of Audi and BMW.
There are a bunch of 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines that aren’t quite as refined as the six-cylinder units found in some other premium SUVs. The diesel in particular is a bit chuggy but it will return decent fuel economy for long distance drivers. The plug-in hybrid option is excellent for those who mostly drive around town and have somewhere to charge it.
What to look for when buying a second hand Volvo XC90
Volvo is rightly praised for its excellent safety record, but its reputation for reliability is a little more patchy. Since the second generation XC90 went on sale in 2015, it has seen a fair number of recalls for issues relating to the airbags, turbocharger and a potential power failure, among others, so make sure these have been done.
If you’re buying a plug-in hybrid model, take the car for a test drive and look out for hesitation before pulling away. This could be a sign that the rear motor is about to fail, prompting an expensive fix.
The electrical system is prone to failure, so take a moment to go around the car checking everything works as it should. Have a play with the infotainment too, as software glitches are not uncommon.
