Is a used Toyota C-HR a good car?

The Toyota C-HR is a small SUV that’s easy to drive, offers low running costs and stands out in a packed car park thanks to its sci-fi styling. Its design is actually one of its more appealing aspects, sporting a sloping roofline, sharp headlights, and a wide grille.

It’s also fuel efficient. The C-HR is available with a choice of two hybrid powertrains that deliver excellent fuel economy. Whichever you choose, you should see more than 50mpg in real world conditions.

Comfort is decent, too, particularly around town, but the Peugeot 3008 and Volkswagen Tiguan are more refined on the motorway.

Downsides? The C-HR's interior is on the small side, especially in the back seat. Legroom and headroom are acceptable, but the sloping roof can make it a little claustrophobic inside. Cargo space is limited too, making it a challenge to fit large items inside. It’s comparable to some hatchbacks, but most other SUVs will beat the C-HR for capacity.

We’re also not big fans of the CVT gearbox, which can sound very strained when accelerating up to motorway speeds. It does help with the impressive fuel economy, though, so it’s the price you pay for paying less at the pumps.

What to look for when buying a second hand Toyota C-HR

The Toyota C-HR is a relatively new car, so there haven't been many long-term reliability studies done on it yet. However, the early signs are good. The C-HR has been praised for its build quality and reliability, and it has a strong reputation for lasting for many years without major problems.

Toyota itself has an excellent reputation for reliability and offers warranties of up to 10 years with its cars.

The C-HR also received a maximum five-star Euro NCAP safety rating in 2017. All versions have Toyota's Safety Sense system, which includes autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and pedestrian detection.
