Best Motability SUVs of 2024

The Motability charity helps people receiving certain mobility allowances to get a new car in exchange for those benefit payments.

Motability offers a wide range of cars to its clients, with the high ride height of SUVs often making them popular with those on the scheme. SUVs are well suited to many people with mobility issues, because they’re usually easier to get in and out of than conventional hatchbacks, saloons and estates.

We’ve assessed all the SUVs available via the Motability scheme and picked the most highly rated.

Skoda Karoq

The Skoda Karoq, a superbly well-rounded mid-size SUV, offers huge amounts of passenger space, a sizeable 588-litre boot and rear seats that can slide forward or backwards to change the balance of rear passenger room and cargo space, or removed altogether. The Karoq’s qualities aren’t limited to practicality, though: it's also good to drive, with excellent refinement, has low running costs and has a well-made interior with clear, usable controls. The styling does plays it safe, but overall the Karoq does so much, so well, that this isn’t an issue.

The Peugeot 2008 is a well styled SUV, with headlight and rear light designs that resemble the teeth and claws of the Peugeot Lion in the brand’s logo. Inside, the dashboard offers a sense of cocooning, thanks to its wraparound structure. and the driver's digital display features some neat 3D graphics. Prospective buyers should test the 2008 before buying, if only to make sure they're happy with the small steering wheel, which takes a little getting used to. Aside from that, the 2008 drives well and offers low running costs.

The Jogger might be more of a people-carrier/estate car than a conventional SUV, but it has so much going for it that we'll stretch the standard definition of a sports utility vehicle slightly to make a case for it here. It has seven seats, rides comfortably, thanks to its compliant suspension, and has an interior that belies its low price. In fact, the Jogger might just be all the car you ever need: we liked it so much we awarded it a 2023 'Buy it' award.

The all-electric MG4 is another winner of our Buy it awards, taking the crown for our 2023 car of the year. We rate it so highly because, in addition to an impressive range of up to 281 miles officially, the MG4 looks absolutely fantastic, is genuinely engaging to drive, constitutes great value for money and has a distinct, likeable character – something that isn’t all that common in the modern world of cars.

Okay, so you'll need to have around £2,800 spare to make a one-off 'advanced payment' (this is in addition the the weekly benefits you would give up for the car) if you want the Tiguan Allspace, but do so and you'll have a seriously competent seven-seat SUV on your driveway. Available with a manual or automatic transmission and paired well with an efficient 148hp 1.5-litre petrol engine, the Tiguan Allspace drives very nicely, and offers fantastic practicality and flexibility thanks to the third row of seats. Oh, and if you don't need that third row, the five-seat Tirguan is also offered via Motability.

The VW T-Cross is a small SUV with a surprisingly spacious cabin and an equally generous amount of standard kit fitted as standard. It’s an easy-to-drive and practical family car with a high seating position, but most of the VW’s cabin materials feel hard, brittle and scratchy, especially in the back. The infotainment system is better, with more features than you’ll find in many rivals, plus it’s bright, responsive, and easy to use.

We were big fans of the previous Sportage, which was an excellent car, but the current generation is even better. A formula of seriously sharp looks, impressive interior design and a comfortable driving experience continues to be a winning one. Interior and boot space make a strong case for this being a seriously practical car, while the amount of standard equipment you get as standard is impressive. We’d recommend stepping up to '3' trim if you can (there’s a higher advanced payment), as this brings a larger 12.3” infotainment screen (up from eight inches), as well as a 12.3” screen for dashboard information.

The Mazda CX-30 is a stylish SUV that’s great to drive and comes packed full of kit, making it a good value alternative to good-looking SUVs, such as the SEAT Ateca. The interior is a touch plain and the infotainment screen is small, but the design is classy and everything feels high quality. Spacious in the front, it’s less so in the rear, where passengers will find legroom limited and a sloping roof reducing headroom.

The Hyundai Tucson is closely related to the mechanically similar Kia Sportage (Hyundai and Kia are part of the same company), with the Tucson also having a bold nose design that you'll either like or not. The comfortable driving experience, spacious cabin, huge boot and excellent levels of standard equipment. There’s a cigarette paper between them, but we slightly prefer the Sportage: opting for the Tucson is perfectly understandable, though, and ownership of either should be enjoyable and hassle-free.

Based on the same mechanical platform as the much-loved (and much-missed) Ford Fiesta, the Puma is a small SUV with the supermini's fantastic handling, but with a higher driving position that makes for easier access to the interior. The rear seats have limited space, especially when compared to some rivals, and the cabin isn’t particularly noteworthy, but the Puma compensates with fantastic exterior styling, and an enthusiastic character on the road.

Modern automatic gearboxes have become so smooth and efficient, while almost every car on this list is offered as an auto, so the best advice is to choose the car you want, and then option the self-shifting gearbox. Volkswagen's dual-clutch gearbox is particularly nice, though, and you'll find this in both the Skoda Karoq, and the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace.

Quite a few, as it happens. From Renault there's the Captur and Arkana; from Toyota there's the C-HR; Nissan's E-Power Qashqai and X-Trail are available, as is the hybrid Ford Kuga, the Honda HR-V, the Peugeot 3008, the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Kia XCeed and Hyundai Tucson, the Vauxhall Grandland PHEV, and the BMW X2 and MINI Countryman PHEVs. Do note hybrids, and PHEVs in particular, tend to cost more than conventional petrol and diesel models, so you may need a substantial advanced payment for some of these cars.

The Skoda Kodiaq is one of the largest SUVs avilable through Motability; you'll need to make an advanced payment to get your hands on one of these, but you'll end up with one of the most competent and characterful seven-seat SUVs on the market if you do.
