Is the Audi SQ5 a good car?
The Audi SQ5 has had a few nips and tucks to keep it competitive next to the likes of the BMW X3 M40i and the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43.
To that end, look closely and you’ll spot a new grille that’s specific to the S models and a remodelled rear bumper. Both bumpers get a brushed aluminium-effect strip and there’s a quartet of very shiny (but fake) exhaust tips at the back.
Top-spec SQ5 TDI Vorsprung models come with larger 21-inch alloy wheels (20-inch come fitted on the standard model) and some extra black bumper and wing-mirror trims.
Interior revisions include the updated MMI 10.1-inch touchscreen, which runs the new MIB 3 infotainment software and can be controlled via voice commands or buttons on the steering wheel and a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display.
The electrically adjustable sport seats come with Nappa leather trim and feature embossed S logos and contrasting stitching. You also get some brushed aluminium inlays on the dashboard and doors as standard, while the SQ5 TDI Vorsprung versions are trimmed in carbon fibre instead.
Vorsprung trim also adds a head-up display, Bang & Olufsen sound system, panoramic glass sunroof and electrically adjustable steering wheel.
The revised Audi SQ5 looks much the same as the old car, but bigger changes lie beneath the skin
Bigger changes lie under the new SQ5’s bonnet. The 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel engine gets stronger steel pistons, an upgraded turbocharger system and some extra cooling, but still produces the same 341hp and 700Nm as before.
As in the old car, there’s a mild-hybrid system that uses a small electric motor to give the engine a boost when you accelerate. The 0-60mph sprint takes the same 5.1 seconds as before.
The Audi SQ5’s suspension has been tuned with performance in mind, so it’s firmer and 30mm lower than the standard Q5’s. Range-topping Vorsprung variants come equipped with a sports differential at the back that helps maximise grip when you accelerate out of corners. They also get air suspension for an extra smooth ride - unfortunately, this isn’t available as an option on the regular SQ5, though.
With six different driving modes, you can adjust the SQ5 to any situation; the suspension height and stiffness is adaptable, as is the steering weight and the engine and gearbox response. There’s also an individual mode where you can adjust these settings to your personal preference.
In Dynamic mode, the SQ5 is noticeably sharper and good fun in the corners despite its weight, although the BMW X3 M and Mercedes-AMG GLC feel sportier and more engaging. Out of the three, the SQ5 is definitely more relaxing and comfier to drive on the motorway and around town - especially if you go for the Vorsprung model with air suspension.
Just like the Audi Q5 (that the SQ5 is based on), there’s good visibility and the driving position is spot on. The standard SQ5 gets a reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors and cruise control as standard. On average you’ll manage 35mpg in the SQ5, which isn’t too shabby for a big performance diesel SUV.
All in all, the Audi SQ5 is a comfy and practical performance SUV. If it sounds right for you, check out our latest deals. Or, you can head to our nearly new page and find a second-hand Audi for a fair price www.carwow.co.uk/audi/used.
