Volvo has pulled the covers off the new EM90, an all-electric luxury MPV for the Chinese market. Read on for all you need to know.

  • New Volvo EM90 revealed
  • All-electric luxury MPV
  • Only available in china – for now…
  • Sleek exterior design
  • Spacious interior with six seats
  • Up to 460 miles of range

This is the new Volvo EM90, an all-electric MPV to provide an alternative to the likes of the Lexus LM.

Under the sleek Scandinavian bodywork you’ll find a lot of parts from the Zeekr 009, a car from Volvo’s parent company Geely. It’s only available in China for now, however the brand hasn’t ruled out a UK debut.

Can you buy a Volvo EM90 in the UK?

The new Volvo EM90 is only available to order in China for now, a market where people movers are still big business. While there’s no word on whether it will come to the UK or not, the brand hasn’t ruled it out,

As for price, the EM90 starts from 818,000 Chinese Yuan, which is just under £92,000. That puts it almost exactly in line with the recently-revealed hybrid Lexus LM.

New Volvo EM90 design

Under the skin, the new Volvo EM90 shares some parts with the Zeekr 009. While it has the same basic profile as that car, the actual design is totally different.

Volvo isn’t a fan of slapping fake grilles on its electric cars, just look at the EX30 and EX90, and the EM90 is no exception. Unlike the shouty chrome front end on the Zeekr, the EM90 has a sleek fascia with some air intakes lower down to cool the batteries. The trademark Volvo Thor’s Hammer headlights also make an appearance.

It’s from the side that this Volvo becomes harder to distinguish from the Zeekr 009, because both cars share the same boxy silhouette. The EM90 does get its own alloy wheel designs, and the rear end is totally unique as well with the tall T-shaped taillights.

New Volvo EM90 interior and infotainment

Step inside and the Volvo EM90 is more akin to a first-class lounge than a family-friendly people carrier. It has six seats, and those in the back have plenty of space to stretch out.

You get a pair of reclining armchairs in the middle row, and there’s a 15.6-inch screen which folds out of the ceiling for you to stream your favourite carwow videos, or anything else you might want to watch. Granted, it’s not as impressive as the whopping 48.0-inch screen you can get in the back of the Lexus LM, but it’s a nice feature to have none the less.

Those up front don’t appear to have been short changed either, as the dashboard has a very clean and minimalist layout a bit like a stylish Scandinavian flat. The cabin centres around a 15.4-inch infotainment system which, like in the Volvo EX30, controls almost all of the car’s functions. Something the EM90 has which the EX30 doesn’t is a digital driver’s display. You get a 10.25-inch screen behind the steering wheel with all your driving information, something which is far more intuitive than looking to the central screen like you have to in the smaller EX30.

New Volvo EM90 batteries and motors

The Volvo EM90 shares a few bits with the Zeekr 009, however it doesn’t use that car’s dual-motor 544hp setup. Instead, it has a single motor powering the rear wheels with 268hp.

Ultimately though, a car like this isn’t about performance. What matters more is getting the most range out of a charge so you don’t have to disturb your peaceful journey with charging stops. Well thankfully, the EM90 has you covered in this department. It uses the same massive 116kWh battery as entry-level versions of the Zeekr 009, delivering up to 459 miles of range. Not bad from a big, heavy car shaped like a brick.

That’s over 20 miles more than the Zeekr 009 with the same battery, however that car is also available with a 140kWh battery with up to 510 miles of range. If your destination is more than 459 miles away, you can top up from 10-80% in 29 minutes.
