Volkswagen is working on a new, more sporty version of its ID3 electric hatchback, and it’s expected to arrive early next year. Read on for all you need to know.

  • New Volkswagen ID3 GTX spotted testing
  • Sporty version of VW’s electric hatchback
  • More aggressive-looking styling details
  • As much as 299hp possible
  • Could be revealed by the end of the year

This is your first look at the new Volkswagen ID3 GTX. Carwow’s spy photographers caught the new electric hot hatch undergoing development testing, and you can see a couple of sporty design upgrades poking out of the camouflage.

There are no official details just yet about what’s powering this MG 4 XPower alternative, however it could share parts with the larger VW ID4 GTX. Expect to see this new car make its debut by the end of the year.

New Volkswagen ID3 GTX design

At a quick glance, this appears to be a standard Volkswagen ID3. There are a few telltales which give away this GTX model’s sporting credentials, they’re just pretty subtle.

This prototype has a different lower bumper to the standard ID3, you can’t hide a massive air intake like that after all. It has a sporty-looking honeycomb effect as well, unlike the standard car which has horizontal slats. The outer vents also appear to have been tweaked, but they’re covered in camouflage for now.

This is also the first time we’ve seen these wheels fitted to an ID3, and they look suitable large for a performance model. The side skirts also look slightly flared, giving the car a more muscular appearance.

It’s equally subtle at the rear, something which is a recurring theme with Volkswagen’s GTX models. You have the same spoiler as the standard car, and the lower bumper appears to remain unchanged as well.

New Volkswagen ID3 GTX motors and batteries

It’s unclear what’s powering this new Volkswagen ID3 GTX, however it’s pretty likely to share parts with the ID4 GTX. That car was recently upgraded with more powerful motors, with it now getting 340hp and all-wheel-drive.

As for batteries, expect to see the same 77kWh unit you’ll find in the Pro S version of the standard ID3, however the extra performance could hamper the range. You can look to the ID4 to get an idea of how many miles you’ll lose.

The range-topping Volkswagen ID4 with a 77kWh battery and dual motors has 322 miles of range, while the GTX model uses the same battery and has 307 miles of range, so 15 miles less. By this logic, the 347 miles you get from the ID3 Pro S could drop to around 330 or so.

When will the new Volkswagen ID3 GTX go on sale?

While an official reveal date is yet to be confirmed, you can expect the new Volkswagen ID3 GTX to make its debut early next year.

It’ll almost certainly be more expensive than the standard car. If you look at the ID4, the GTX model fetches a £3,000 premium over the next model down in the range, so the new ID3 GTX could cost around £44,000.
