Car changing is a big deal
Mercedes has finally pulled the covers off the new AMG GT Coupe, and it uses a good old-fashioned 4.0-litre V8 engine. Read on for all you need to know.

The all-new Mercedes-AMG GT is on sale now, and this alternative to the Porsche 911 starts from £164,765.
It has a similar design to the old car, and it uses a 4.0-litre V8 engine with no electrification.
New Mercedes-AMG GT price and specs
The new Mercedes-AMG GT 63S is available to order now, and you’ll have to fork out £164,765 if you fancy this V8 coupe. The closest alternative to this car is the Porsche 911 Turbo, and that car will set you back £159,100.
As you might expect rom a car at this price, you get a lot of kit as standard. All cars get matte black 21-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic glass roof, adaptive suspension, heated and cooled seats, a heated steering wheel and a premium Burmester sound system.
There’s also a Performance version, costing £175,765, which gets a smattering of additional sporty trinkets. This version gets a fixed rear wing, 21-inch forged alloy wheels, ceramic brakes and performance bucket seats.
New Mercedes-AMG GT design
The new Mercedes-AMG GT shares parts with the SL convertible, however you wouldn’t know just by looking at it. The design is completely different to that car, but it is similar to the outgoing GT Coupe.
This new car is all about being smooth and subtle, so you have some slim LED headlights up front with simple air intakes just below. They’re smaller and have less black plastic than the SL’s, so look a bit classier. You also have a wide grille with vertical bars.
The side profile is more or less the same as the current car’s, meaning it looks sleek and sporty. You can have either 20 or 21-inch alloy wheels, and you have flush-fitting door handles.
Looking at the rear, it looks like a cross between the current SL convertible and the old GT. It has a new light bar across the tailgate, as well as some black glossy trim. You also have a more complex diffuser than the SL, as well as a new rear spoiler.
New Mercedes-AMG GT engine and performance
Those who were left cold by the 2.0-litre hybrid engine in the new Mercedes-AMG C63 will be happy to see a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 under the bonnet of the new GT. There’s no electrification here either.
You can get two versions of this car, the AMG GT 55 and the AMG GT 63. The 55 has 476hp and 700Nm of torque, while the full-fat 63 has 585hp and 800Nm of torque. That’s a decent power increase over the old car, which had 462hp.
Go for the GT 55 and you’ll be able to go from 0-60mph in 3.9 seconds, while the more powerful car will do it in 3.6 seconds. Both get a nine-speed automatic gearbox, and the new AMG GT is the first 2-door AMG to get a V8 and all-wheel-drive.
New Mercedes-AMG GT suspension and aerodynamics
The new Mercedes-AMG GT is not only more powerful than the old car, there are plenty of aero upgrades as well. There are new active underbody panels to reduce drag, a mostly smooth underfloor and an active rear spoiler integrated into the tailgate.
If that’s not enough, the optional Aero Pack will include extra front air deflectors, a new rear spoiler lip, a bigger rear diffuser and a fixed rear wing.
The new GT also has semi-active roll stabilisation as standard, to help keep body roll in the corners to a minimum. If you’re cruising in a straight line, then the system offers zero anti-roll effect so bumps on one side don’t affect the other.
New Mercedes AMG-GT interior and infotainment
The interior design of the new Mercedes-AMG GT will be familiar to fans of the SL convertible, because it’s more or less exactly the same.
The central touchscreen is slightly larger than the SL’s at 11.9-inches, and you get a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display as standard. Unlike the old GT, this new car is also a 2+2 meaning it has some rear seats.
