Hyundai Kona Electric Review & Prices

Picking what type of engine your next car should have is a bit like choosing what to have for breakfast. Just as some prefer toast over cornflakes or porridge, so Hyundai realises some customers would rather have a fully electric car rather than a petrol or hybrid.

That’s why there’s a new Hyundai Kona Electric coming to a showroom near you soon, to sit alongside the petrol and hybrid versions.

The Kona Electric is the most expensive of the three, with prices starting from £34,995. But that is cheaper than the Volkswagen ID3, which starts from £37,115, and the Peugeot e-2008, which costs upwards of £36,500.

Your money buys a larger car than the first-generation Hyundai Kona. The new model is longer, taller, and wider than the old. Hyundai promises 10mm more headroom in the front and 15mm more in the rear, as well as 5mm more legroom in the front and a substantial 77mm improvement in the back. Luggage space is up to a competitive 466 litres.

The new Kona Electric comes with a choice of two battery sizes. The smaller 48.4kWh battery is paired with a 156hp motor for a maximum range of 223 miles. The larger 65.4kWh battery is matched to a 218hp motor with a range of up to 319 miles.

It’s worth knowing that range with the larger battery drops to 269 miles with 19-inch alloy wheels. Swapping to smaller 17-inch alloys is a no-cost option on the range-topping Ultimate model, bringing the potential distance between charges back up to 319 miles. The smaller wheels are standard on the entry-level Advance spec.

There are two other specifications, N Line and N Line S, that come with sportier looks than either the Advance or Ultimate car. It’s almost like having two line-ups in one – the Advance and Ultimate for more conservative customers, and the N Line and N Line S for buyers who want a more youthful and dynamic look.
