Ineos FAQs

Ineos Automotive was formed by industrial billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, after he spotted a gap in the market for an "uncompromising off-roader" in February 2017. The company's stated aim as to build "the world's purest 4x4", with explorers, farmers and off-road enthusiasts among the target audience.

The first model, the Grenadier, was born out of the gap in the market perceived with the end of production of Land Rover's original Defender. It's named after the London pub in which Ratcliffe is said to have been enjoying a pint when he had the idea.

Ineos Automotive acquired its factory in Hambach, Germany from Mercedes-Benz in late 2020, a site that previously built the Smart EQ Fortwo electric vehicle. The first cars rolled off the production line in 2022.

At present, it's only the Grenadier 4x4, but there are plans to add more models. The Grenadier Quartermaster pick-up was revealed at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed, and the brand is also looking into alternative fuelled vehicles.
