Is the Peugeot e-308 SW a good car?

Electric estate cars are a fairly rare breed, but the latest model from Peugeot joins the small and eclectic collection of vehicles that includes the MG5 EV, Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer Electric and the Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo

The Peugeot sits somewhere in the middle of this bunch - it’s premium, but not too upmarket, with a really nicely-appointed interior that could easily be compared to cars much more expensive. It’s somewhat like the M&S of electric estates.

Peugeot’s approach is interesting. Like the regular e-308 hatchback, the e-308 SW has a relatively small battery, but by fitting a relatively modestly-powered electric motor it manages to eke out a maximum range of 267 miles, which is impressive efficiency. The payoff for that is that, for an electric car, it’s remarkably slow. The benchmark 0-62mph sprint takes 9.8 seconds - the much cheaper MG5 EV does it in 7.7 seconds. While you shouldn’t worry that the e-308 SW won’t keep up with traffic, it will probably make high-speed overtakes and motorway driving a little less relaxing.

The real draw is inside. The e-308 SW shares its interior with the regular Peugeot e-308, which is a good thing. It has a really modern and attractive dashboard, with a 10.0-inch infotainment display set above a narrow touchscreen that can be customised with adjustable ‘i-Toggle’ shortcuts to key functions.

The dials and gauges are all digital too, and like all Peugeots they’re set high up above a small, squashed steering wheel. Some drivers don’t get on very well with this setup, but others find it very comfortable - definitely something to try before you buy.

There aren't many electric estate cars around, and the Peugeot e-308 SW looks like it's going to be a particularly pleasant one to sit in - even if it is a bit pricey

Material quality is high throughout and storage isn’t bad - with a pair of cupholders, a wireless phone charging pad and capacious door bins make up for the relatively puny glovebox.

Of course, with an estate car it’s all about storage in the back - and here the e-308 SW excels, with a 548-litre boot that’s significantly larger than the MG5 EV’s 464-litre space. Unlike the MG5, it has a totally flat floor, too, including when the seats are folded down.

Two trim levels are offered, named Allure and GT. The former is well kitted-out with 17-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats and steering wheel, a parking camera, LED headlights and cruise and climate control.

GT trim, which is a £2,810 upgrade, adds keyless entry, adaptive cruise control, Matrix LED lights and wireless smartphone connectivity. For a limited time from launch, there’s also a First Edition model - which builds on the GT specification with unique upholstery for a slightly more upmarket feel.

115kW Allure 54kWh 5dr Auto £33,997 Compare offers

With a starting price of more than £40,000 the Peugeot e-308 SW looks quite pricey next to other medium-sized EVs. The MG5 EV undercuts it by 25%, and even the mechanically identical Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer Electric is a couple of thousand pounds cheaper.

While you do get a lot of equipment for your money, much cheaper EVs offer far more performance - the MG4 XPower, for example, has almost three times the power for significantly less money.
