McLaren 620R Review & Prices

The term ‘race car for the road’ gets thrown around quite a bit, but in the case of the McLaren 620R, it’s perfectly apt. That’s because this is a road-legal supercar, but it’s really designed to be used on track days, and is based on the 570S GT4 race car. That’s some serious pedigree.

It’s a bit like a professional footballer who has hung up their boots and now plays for their Sunday League team for fun. Still incredibly capable but not quite as serious and focused as before.

‘Not quite’ being the pertinent term, because by any other measure the 620R is a serious bit of kit. You get a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged engine that makes 620hp and the race car’s aerodynamic bodywork that makes it supremely capable on track.

It’s actually capable of the fastest lap times of any of McLaren’s Sports Series cars, further helped by sticky Pirelli tyres.

You want outright performance figures? They’re impressive, with 0-60mph coming up in 2.8 seconds and the top speed is 200mph. Not necessarily relevant on a track day but great for bragging in the pit lane.

There are lightweight materials everywhere, with carbon-fibre used for the basic structure of the car as well as the seats, rear spoiler, bonnet and more. Despite this lightweight upgrade, the bonnet still opens to reveal a small but useful storage area.

With all that power, you need to be able to stop effectively. As such, the 620 R comes with carbon-ceramic brakes, and these are housed behind centre-locking alloy wheels (19 inches at the front and 20 inches at the back).

The suspension has been lowered and the track (the distance between the wheels) widened, which helps lower the centre of gravity and improves handling. You also get adjustable dampers from the 570S GT4 car so you can tune the car to your personal preference.

All very serious and focused, as you can see. Ultimately, adding a passenger seat and some road legal tyres to a motorsport competition car does mean there are sacrifices to be made. If you want a performance car to enjoy down your favourite twisty back road on a summer’s evening, the 620R will be unnecessarily intense for most. But if you like to spend your weekends at the track channelling your inner Lando Norris, there are few better options out there.
