The Mini three- and five-door hatchbacks and the convertible have been given a mid-life nip and tuck thanks to a refreshed design and some new tech.

The new car looks very different from the outgoing car.

Stick the updated Mini side-by-side with the old car and the first obvious change is its grille. It’s grown in size, and now features a goatee-like black surround as well as two air intakes in place of the outgoing car’s fog lamps.

The plastic inside the headlights of the Mini is now painted black too, rather than chrome as before.

The new car retains the current car’s Union-Flag brake lights.

Visual changes around the rest of the Mini are a little more subtle. The side indicators have been upgraded to LED units, with the rear fog light at the back now a part of the lower bumper trim.

Changes have come to the hatch, convertible and Electric too

Five fresh alloy wheel designs have been introduced too, with three new colour options — including ‘look-at-me’ Zest Yellow as an exclusive option for the convertible.

There’s a rather jazzy new roof option for the hatch as well. Mini calls it the ‘multitone roof’, and it’s a gradient colour that starts in one blue, fades into a lighter one and eventually turns black.

Hop inside the Mini and you’ll be met with an 8.8-inch infotainment as standard, along with some new piano black trim bits. A 5-inch digital driver display is now a no-cost bit of kit, too, along with a leather sports steering wheel.

The new car’s cabin looks much the same as the outgoing model’s.

Making its way to a Mini options list for the first time is an adaptive suspension system. This allows the car to automatically adjust itself depending on the road surface to improve comfort or handling.

Zesty yellow is a bright new option for the convertible

One thing that remains the same for the Mini lineup is its engine options. It still kicks off with a 1.5-litre, 102hp option for the entry-level ‘One’ cars through to a 2.0-litre, 231hp unit for high-performance John Cooper Works cars.

The Mini Electric keeps its 135kW electric motor too, which returns a 145-mile range and can sprint from 0-62mph in 7.3 seconds.

New 2021 Mini price and release date

Pricing for the Mini range kicks off at £16,045 for the three-door hatch, £16,745 for the five-door, £20,705 for the convertible and £27,920 for the Electric. You can order one now, with deliveries starting in spring.
